Best Configured DSNs for ODBC

By OrangeStripe ·
We have developed several applications using MS Access/VBA that connect to our Oracle 8i database. On each PC that uses these applications I create a System DSN configured using the Oracle ODBC drivers. The PCs have operating systems that go fromWindows 95 to Windows XP.

Currently, I must add the appropriate drivers and configured DSN to each new PC. Then every couple years I end up updating all PCs because of compatibility of the Oracle ODBC drivers and the database/Oracle client software versions. This seems very inefficient and I am wondering if there is a better way to do this. Is it possible to place the definition of the DSN and the appropriate drivers out on the network and then somehow configure the client DSN to point tothese things? What is a file DSN? Would it be something I could use for this function?

I myself used only the classical systems. The file-DSN would allow to place all drivers somewhere in an accessible directory on the server which can be used by all users. I suspect that one still would have to install the necessary details on each computer. However, the drivers would have to be replaced only in one directory. If this would slow down the systems depends probably on your network.
Good luck

Thanks for both of these answers. It looks like I can at least try the file system DSN. I will have to see how this affects speed. While I was hoping that there would be a shortcut, it is somewhat comforting to know that others are dealing with this same situation. If I discover anything new in the process of this next upgrade of the ODBC I will let you know.

Our organization does its custom databases the same way, with identical results/problems.

When using Access and ODBC, you will constantly need to update drivers, etc. I don't think you can reconfigure the client DSN to go through a network and then to the Oracle db, as ODBC uses a direct connection. If you find differently, please let me know!

Also, we have survived this support nightmare by documenting all of the implmentation and connection quirks from varying OSs. We do use a network file to store .dll files, drivers, etc. that regularly produce errors when trying to establish or reestablish ODBC connectivity.

Good luck!
