    Bizzare IE 6 behaviour

We have Windows XP SP1 with IE6 on a Microsoft network. There are approx 24 PCs connecting to the Internet via a Proxy on a broadband connection.
IE will sometimes just hang. No specific identifiable user actions or web pages. The bizzare thing is that Task Manager will show more IEXPLORE processes than visible IE sessions. Eg 2 visible IE sessions and 4 or 5 processes.
If the process representing the hung IE session is ended in Task Manager, then the previously unseen IE session windows willappear on the Taskbar and are active.
Has anyone heard of this behaviour? The problem seems to occur under XP only as previous Win2k builds were fine.
Could this be network related (NetBIOS, WINS etc)?
We have tweaked NetBIOS over TCP/IP settingsin the Netbt reg key which seem to have improved boot performance – could this have bearing on browsing?
We have also increased maximum HTTP 1.0 and 1.1 connections to no avail.
