Black Listed!!?!?!?!?!?!?!

By Megtek ·
Hi, I believe that my domain name has been black listed. I have two domain names, and many of my clients can send and receive from one but not the other. I believe that this happened because my e-mail server was "hacked" into and use as a relay for spam. What do I have to do to confirm that it is in fact black listed, and have it removed?

Here is a link with multiple blacklisting sites:

(remove any spaces)

Basically, when someone reports your i.p. as a spammer, not much happens, when multiple reports are filed, you go on "the list". Each spam blocking org has their own compliance rules. One may be you didn't have reverse DNS... the other may be you were being used as a relay.

Regardless, you have to contact the organization above, and they will basically tell you that there must be no offending reports from your host for at a minimum of 2 weeks, in which you can return back and they will remove your host from the "blocked" list. It's a very tedious process as I said before, each group has their own policies on how to be removed.

Good luck

First thing you have to do is close your open relay. The mail server should not allow relaying without authentication. Once that is done you have to contact the organization that has blacklisted you. Usually they will allow you to submit your mail server IP to be tested for open relay. Once verified that it is no longer open, they will remove you. Realize you may be on more than one list and also that you are only blocked by servers that use those lists. If possible you could investigate changing the IP on your mail server to expedite it's functionality again, After fixing the open relay of course.

It would help to get someone to forward you the kickback error message. It should identify the RBL(s) blocking your server. I use sbl.spamhaus.org and a common older one is relays.osirusoft.com but there are a bunch out there. The error may also tell you how to correct the black listing. If it is not hard to change your IP, I would do that and not worry about the blacklist.
