Blank screen while accessing an mdb file

    Locked

    by stergios_nik ·

    Hello.

One of my users is experiencing a problem while accessing a Microsoft Access 2000 database.

The problem is random and it happens from time to time.

The PC is a Pentium III 600 Mhz with 128MB of RAM.

While the user moves from record to record suddently the screen gets blank and the mouse freezes.

The user is forced to reset the computer in order to to get back to work.

Is this a memory or a VGA problem that causes this problem? Do I have to upgrade the memory?

    Any ideas?

    Thank you in advance.

Sounds more like a hardware failure than a memory problem.

Memory problems tend to mainfest themselves in BSOD or parity errors or “not enough memory” type of error messages. You do not mention which OS, but if it is Win2000 or WinXP you might be able to check Event Viewer for errors.

The PC itself sounds like it may be 3 or 4 years old. How is it configured hardware-wise? How many devices do you have on it (cd-roms, hdds, etc.)?

This may be signs of beginning power failures or systemboard problems. If there are similar units in the building, you might want to swap the hdd and place it in another computer to find out whether the problem follows the software.

If you cannot do that, then I’d recommend testing the power supply or replacing it first and seeing if the problem goes away.

A faulty hard drive crashed one of our Access DBs regularly until we actually replaced it. It did similar things, the whole computer would freeze and actually corrupt the DB. Since the replacement everything has been fine.

Hey…here’s the answer to your problem. I have had this problem with multiple programs. First of all on a 600 MHz computer you should have no less than 256MB of memory. (Win 95/98 have problems letting go of resources … a little better with Win2K but not really fixed until XP.)
Your problem is caused by one of two things….the sector on the harddrive where the database or the program is…is bad or your memory is going bad. On memory…sometimes the memory above say…96 MB starts going bad and when u reach that point…u have problems. So, my recommendation is to change the harddrive first then change and add more memory. If possible bump up the memory to 512 and put XP on it…you won’t regret it. And if u put a 7200 RPM or faster harddrive on even better. Let me know if this helps u out… choro007@hotmail.com
