Blocking users from downloading

By kneighbor ·
I run one of many sites and need to block my users from downloading files (exe's etc.). I do not use a proxy, I need something software related if possible.

Blocking users from downloading

Your question mentions "etc". Does "etc." include JPG, MPEG, GIF, ActiveX, ZIP, AVI, .....?

Does your question concern web browsers, or does it include other web utilities that might do downloads?

two options:

1) use a firewall, e.g. MSProxy server, and block access to/from port 21. This blocks the FTP protocol. This is effective whether the download comes from a web browser, an FTP utility, or some custom app. However, other protocols can be used to download files also, so thisisn't perfect.

2) If you are only concerned about web browsers, then you could alter the security settings of the browser on each desktop. For IE 5.0 pick "internet options" from the tools menu; then select the security tab; select a zone (you may want to do this for all 4 zones). Click the "custom level" button; then disable all the 3 options that mention download.

This approach is close to what you asked for, but can be undone by a savvy user.

go one step further than the step above and integrate group policies and with the asstance of the IEAK if you are using MSIE, the users won't be able to touch it!
