blue screen of death

By Tiny83 ·
I am running a student version of Windows 2000 issued thru Devry University. Recently I have experienced a rash of memory dumps, aka... blue screen of death, is this an OS related problem or hardware? I am running a PIII 800mhz(about 2yrs old, viper770 32mb video, soundblaster live (both about 3yrs old) and 512mb ram.

I would suspect the OS.

Check your service pack level, and see if you can update to a newer service pack.

Depending on what software you run (W2K is not game friendly) your installation may be somewhat corrupt, and a re-install is in order.By re-install, I mean wipe the drive, or at least the Windows folders and start over with a fresh clean install of W2K.
Do not install any software that does not specificaly say it works under W2K.

BSD's & memory dumps can mean a lot of different things. Creative Labs Soundblaster audigy drivers sometimes can cause a mem dump and reboot. Incompatible memory [meaning two different ram sticks being used that just don't like each other]can cause a mem dump as well as a BSD.. Bad ram chip on a vid card, corrupted O/S files, bad Direct X files or using vid drivers that are not incompatible with the Direct X version your using. The list is almost endless. Check your event viewer for any critical error messages that may point you to the root cause. Also, when you get a BSD, usually there is a message of what caused the error and the error code. This goes a long way in determining the root cause.

with the memory dump comes a code ( pretty long code )
take that code and look it up in your TechNet cd or on the net at microsofts site.

I am running a Windows 2000 and the viper770 32mb video card a had the same blue screen of death as you.

My cause of the blue screen of death was installing NVIDIA card video drivers from NVIDIA.

I fix it this way.

I uninstall NVIDIA video driver, then I install the video driver from the windows 2000 cd.

Chas answer is right about the (W2K is not game friendly) and (viper770 card is not friendly to W2k and the card doesn?t sport 3D GAMES.
