Boot sector WRITE VIRUS

I have a boot sector write virus on my system. I use Win 98 second edition as my operating system. I did FDISK and FORMAT. When attempting to re-install the operating system, the error message come up that a virus is present. Is this real or bogus? If real, how do I get rid of it? I suspect that I need to get into the boot section of the hard drive. – Thanks, John
