booting a sparcstation 20

By freetech ·
i'm trying to install linux on a sparcstation 20. i've tried suse 7.1 &7.3 for sparc and mandrake 7.1 for sparc. here's what happens: after the installation completes using default settings, it doesn't re-boot to linux. it just goes to the prom boot screen and quits.
any ideas? i'm verrrry new to linux.
thanx in advance for the help.

Just guessing here, but from the boot prompt, try the following:
b<enter>
b linux<enter>
b \etc\linux<enter> (put in the real path to the executable)

also try a ? or the word "help" at the boot prompt, and see if it gives you instructions.

Good luck.

You might not have your auto-boot set to true.

try this at the ok prompt:

ok setenv auto-boot? true
ok boot

if you get a boot error after that then you may need to check your boot device. If you need more info let me know.

tried the auto-boot command.
here's the reply:

ok boot
Bootdevice: /iommu/sbus/espdma@f,400000/esp@f,800000/sd@3.0 file and args:
Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package
Can't open boot device
ok

Sounds like the mandrake install is doing something wrong.

Try this, I got this from sunsolve.

Load and boot MUNIX and go into format. Use the "backup" menu option to search for a backup label. If one is found, it restores the label. If oneis not found, verify the partition map and the defect information, and then relabel the disk.

It is vital that before labeling, the partition map and defect list is correct.

If this does not work try installing a different distro. See if thatworks, if it does let mandrake know.

get your hands on a Solaris 2.x cd and place it in the cd-rom. at the ok prompt type this:

ok boot cdrom -s

once it boots and you're in, type this:

# format

then follow the rest of the directions from the previous post

To get the binary dist. for solaris 8 it can be downloaded from http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/get.html

It comes down in an ISO format and you just need to burn it onto a cd

Once you have this you will have the option to run Solaris or Linux

Cheers
Peter
