Bulk E-mails with Exchange 5.5

By bob.burkowski ·
I am being asked if we can use our corporate Exchange Server to send bulk e-mails during business hours. Does anyone have any insight on this? What are the problems? What are the alternatives?

Thanks

Bulk E-mails with Exchange 5.5

Well, it depends on if you are talking about directed mail or SPAM. There are issues with both but more with SPAM than directed.
First the issues that are inherent to both.
1. You have to consider not only the outgoing load but the load on your server that will result from replies and bouncebacks.
2. You have to consider the additional load on administration this will bring.
3. You have to consider the additional bandwidth useage both additional incoming as well as outgoing and what costs are associated with that.
4. You will want to look at your TOS with your upline provider to see if there are ant Service Contract issues with doing this. (Excessive bandwidth charges, Violations of TOS, etc.)
SPAM will bring all of the above and several other liabilities.
1. Getting on the "abuse.net" list for SPAM originators
2. Possibly getting access to necessary recipients domains denied due to excessive SPAM and/or inclusion on lists like noted above.
3. Possible legal action against your company depending on how the SPAM is targeted and moved.
4. Possibly losing your access to your upline provider's services due to violation of AUP or TOS.
5. Possible attacks and/or email bombs due to the recipients anger at SPAM. (yours or others)
The list can go on and on.

Bottom line:
Get another domain and server if you are talking about a lot of Bulk E-mail. Use it only for that account. Be prepared to move the service when/if the upline for that domain cuts the account.

Thereare a lot of good ways to go about legitimately mailing bulk invoices, ads, newsletters, etc. You just want to try and avoid the pitfalls.

Good Luck
