Two questions means 2 answers:
1. There are many models. Some of them might be better for you then other. The latest models are all about AI. Do you need that?
2. What do you mean with “compact” (what size of screen, do you want a numeric keypad?) and what is the maximum weight you prefer? Most laptops are “fast” although it depends, of course, on what you want to do on it. So: what are you going to use it for? Any other requirements, like WiFi 6, 3 USB-C ports, non-glaring screen, etc? -

What is your budget? Can you use an older model if you don’t need the most current AI features?

I currently use Surface Go 2 and is extremely slow…
I do NOT need AI.
By compact I mean; light weight & easy to carry on the go.
I don’t need any special requirements, I’d love to have built-in cellular like the Surface Go 2 but not most.I appreciate your help.

My laptop has the usual i7 32GB RAM 1TB SSD and RTX 4070 which I don’t know if the Surface offers.
In the past the Surface was UNREPAIRABLE if the battery wore out or failed. Just about any repair was impossible. For light on the go work and no play I use a tablet and my phone.

I can’t write I’d ever buy a Surface given the lack of performance there. But then I use mine to play games so I’ll go with the laptops with i7, GPU etc.
My brother carries a nice enough Core i5 w/32GB RAM and Windows 11 from Dell. Some Inspiron. It was under 500 and fits his needs along with being fairly lightweight.
I would NOT pass up a fast laptop because it listed AI. Example: https://www.cbsnews.com/essentials/best-laptops-under-1000/

Advice on Compact and Lightweight Laptops

Hi David,
The Microsoft Surface is a great choice if you value portability, a sleek design, and solid performance. It’s especially good for productivity tasks and has excellent build quality.
Other options to consider:
Dell XPS 13: Compact, lightweight, and powerful.
Apple MacBook Air (M1/M2): Great for speed, battery life, and portability.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon: Known for durability and performance.
Let me know your specific needs, and I can suggest more options!
