am trying to configure a cable modem for Linux Mandrake 8.0, thank you

Set it up to use DHCP. It’ll work from there by itself.
It’s easy.
You MAY find that BOOTP rather than DHCP is the default. I’m not too sure about that on Mandrake, but older Red Hat did.

The best process that I have seen is the Home Networking Mini-HOWTO from http://www.linux.org -> documentation. It’s got step-by-step instructions.
