Can I have my backup tape back?

By Sameh Fouad ·
I am new in using backup tapes. After using it for a couple of monthes now, I did something crazy. I tried to get rid of all the incremental backups on the tabe ( I got some false confidence). In the restore tab, I used the erase command (I thought it would be non abrasive as formatting) to erase all the media on one of my tabes, and when I tried to backup using this tabe, a message pop up telling me that there is no unused media on the tabe. I tried many times but no way. Can I have it back orshall I replace it ith a new one?
Any help?

I would try formatting the tape.

The erase funtion may have failed, or may have just marked the used sections of the tape as un-available.

Formatting the tape places no more wear beyond what would be done by recording the tape, and can clean up data drops caused by excess noise.

In my audio days, it was common practice to bulk erase tapes to improve the performance when using a tape over again. This would be very similar to formatting your data tape.

Thank you for helping but I am afraid I've already tried to format the tape after erasing the media, but unfortunately the format command is not available.

I take it you are using NT Backup. The cataloug still exists and the tape probably still has a label. That cataloug has been erased, so remove the cataloug and then try the tape.

Yes, you took it right, I am using NT Backup on Windows 2000 server.
But the problem is that in the restore tab, I find only the tape icon with no catalogs, so how will I remove the catalogs as you asked me. Also in the backup tab, only new media is found in the combo box.
You know, I tried to format another tape just now, but a message showed up telling that the media is mounted in a drive that does not support formatting. Please help me, I am afriad something like this could happen when I am in need to the data. Regards
