Can i install xp pro over an unfinished home installation?

By sebas web ·
The problem im having is that i tried to install xp home on two computers but i realised i didnt have a key for it and i have the genuine disk. Later i found i have the xp pro disk with the serial numbers for it. Well when i turn on both comps both show put the xp home disk and the serial key. Can i install the xp pro when the unfinished home hasnt been installed.

P.S. one comp is a laptop the other a desktop. I have tried booting off the cd it wont work. Any help is appreciated.

Yes you can if you have M$ branded Install Disc's

As apposed to a System Makers Recovery Disc.

Just follow the directions listed under Method 2 here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

But no matter what you do you need to Boot off the XP Pro Install CD and not allow the computer to start from the HDD.

well thanks for the help but what happened was i tried it at least a couple of times. What happens is i change the boot order to disk first then hardrive then the rest. But it still doesn't work it just turn on setup then its out then all black with a dash line on the top and then goes straight to home edition and then install home edition with serial key. Im not sure what else to do the boot sequence was the last of what i thought to do.

Are you sure that your Install Disc is working?

It just doesn't sound as if it is.

By doing the Repair Option it should override the existing Windows Install. And I know that it works as I had to do it earlier today.
