Can I move sam database to other compute

By surveymaster.shivaram ·
I want to upgrade my PDC from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000. At present the hard disk space in our PDC is very less. Is there any way moving sam database directly to windows 2000 computer and upgrade the database. Please guide me

Each machine has a SAM. The SAM for any domain controller has a SAM which includes all domain accounts. If you create a Windows 2000 Server and add it to the domain as a domain controller, it will get a copy of your domain's information.

Note that if you keep the PDC as it is, the size of the SAM will NOT shrink. You would have to re-install NT4 on the machine and make it a member server (not a domain controller) to get rid of the SAM information.

Good luck.

Try to make ERD (Emergency Repair Disk) using rdisk.exe which will save SAM database on the floppy disk. Then clean install the PDC machines with W2K. After then repair the W2K wich will asking ERD, that will copy user account to W2K PDC.

Other cleaner method, demote the PDC to BDC and promote one of your BDC to PDC. Then install W2K the old PDC machine as NT 4.0 comaptible BDC. After finish intalling, promote the W2k BDC to PDC again.
