can not send email under WinXPHome

    Locked

    by consultant davea ·

My WinXP Home system suddenly stopped sending email. I can retrieve my pop3 mail, no problem, but can no longer send it. However, I can send email to that smtp server for the very same account from any other computer I go to, just not this particular one.

Does anyone have an ideas what I should look at?

    Thanks,
    Dave A.

have you checked your pop3 server settings in email client/account/mail? perhaps an anti-virus package was setup as the mail ‘server’, in order to screen outgoing emails, and now it has been uninstalled.

You have probably updated to SP2, which enables it’s firewall by default. Try disabling the firewall to check if it is the culprit, then configure it to allow sending mail and reenable it (if you don’t already have another 3rd party firewall installed).

      Sgt_schultz,

I know nothing – sorry – actually, I disabled my antivirus software as part of the diagnosis of this problem. It had no affect.

      Thanks,

      Marjus,

I have purposely NOT upgraded to SP2; I am waiting for the first couple of critical updates from MSFT that fix the problems introduceed with SP2. I keep getting the update messages from update manager; I just ignore them.

Is there anything else I can try?

Sending mail is a function of tcp port 25

You can test if port 25 is working by trying to login to your smtp server from the pc not sending mail.

open telnet and use stmp.address 25

if you get a responce, then port 25 is open and your e-mail client on the machine is not able to send.

if you get no connection, your tcp / winsock may have been damaged or port 25 is block your computer or some other program the pc is running.
