Can Win 98 Fat32 to see XP with NTFS?

By forrests ·
I have a home/office network with 3 Win 98SE computers with Fat 32 formatted HDs, 1 machine with Win 2000 pro and a Fat 32 HD and 1 Win XP machine with an NTFS formatted HD. The Win XP machine is the primary computer in the group and it was set-up before I found out that sharing between data between Fat32 and NTFS HDs may be a problem. Is there a way to allow all the different machines to access each other's files. I WANT open access since there is no need for any permission restrictions between the machines. It is fine for all of them to see all of each machine's HDs and have unlimited read/write access. Can this be done and if so, how? What protocol is best to use for the network? I have TCP/IP and NetBeui on all the machines. I access the internet with an external DSL modem hooked to a router which doles out the IP addresses to each of the connected devices and to a shared printer with it's own IP address (there is a fast ethernet switch box in between to give me enough plug-ins). Thanks for the help.

There should be no problem accessing the XP NTSF drive over a network from your W98 boxes.

The problem with W98 and NTSF only comes into play if both drives are local drives.

There is a software package that allows W98 to access a NTSF drive available from www.systeminternals.com

But, you should not need that to access networked computers.

As to setting things up.
Start with the XP box, and use the network setup tools.

Just a little warning for you, you do not want full read/write access between the machines and then connect to the internet without good internet security, you're just asking someone to hack into your pc's. I'm not the expert to ask there but I don't think its safe at all having shared disk access and connecting to the internet in any fashion.

Agree with TheChas, no prob. between file formats.
If you have TCP/IP setup and working correctly, you shouldn't need NetBeui at all. When setting up the XP box shared folders/drives, check off "share this folder on the network". Set no passwords for shared resources. Ensure that all systems have the correct workgroup name.
You should still use antivirus protection on all machines locally, and preferably use a router with stateful packet inspection.

Regarding the previous comment.

Netbui is an extremely fast and efficent non routable protocol.

In a small network, I would install Netbui and make it the default protocol for all machines. TCP/IP is only then used when needed.

2000 and XPhowever install TCP/IP as the default protocol.

A good idea might be to run the network setup wizard for the XP machine. You can also create a network setup client for the Windows 98 machines from this wizard.

It is not a good idea to leave default permissions on shares and folders. This is how the Sir Cam virus spreads. I would also suggest installing Zonealarm on a couple of your PC to check what is happening over your network. This will require a little patience and a learning curve, but will be worth the effort.
