Can you add a disk to C drive?

By joegrosskopf ·
I know in NT4 you could not add another disk to the C:\drive. Can you do this in Windows 2000 server?

Comment from joegrosskopf@filamatic.com on 1/11/02:
Thanks. I should have been more specific. I already have a Raid 5 disk array of 3 disk. I am going to add another harddisk and would like to allocate space to each of my volumes. C was always aproblem in NT4 because it was the active disk. I wanted to know if this was a problem in 2000. Thanks

If I understand what you're asking, you want to expand your C: volume to allow it to use space on a second hard drive. The answer is yes and no, bur primarily no - if the volume was originally created on a dynamic disk you can extend it, but if it was originally created on a basic disk, you can't. The Catch22 here is, I believe, that when you install Win2K it creates a basic disk by default (i.e., the C: drive) and you have to upgrade it to dynamic. Therefore, your C: drive will never be created on a dynamic disk and therefore you still can't extend it. This is my understanding of the situation, anyway. Hope this helps!

PS I hope you do know about utilities such as Partition Magic that you can use to do things like this. I believe it's Win2K compatible, at least at the workstation level. I'm not sure if they have a version that you could use on a Win2K server.

If you are using RAID5 you can indeed add another disk. You say that you have more than one volume though and that may be cause for concern. If you want to split the space on the new drive between volumes you need to format the new disk with the partitons you want to allocate to each volume. After your partitions are established you can then expand your volumes. Just remember that if you are running dynamic disks you need to convert your new hard drive to dynamic before you expand your volume.

Hi

I would guess you will have to find out how your raid controller works. When you add the four disk one of two things should happen.
1) the patrions on the raid controller increase by the size of the disk add.(the option that you would like in this situation)
2) the partions stay the same size but spread of the extra disk and you now have some (more) free space at the bottom of the disks the create an other partion.

IMHO I would not make your C: dynamic, we nearly lost a server when one chap did that here by mistake. We couldn't see the drive or access it and the changed to the C: drive. Some how they changed the C: back to non dynamic.

When we increased the size on our main Server backups were made of all drives on the raid. C: and drives were deleted and C: recreaded bigger the same size. (There was free space on the raid). Then Backup were restored.

I hope this helps
Pierre
