Can you run Disk mirroring and Raid 5 at

By harvardd ·
On a 2000 server, can you run disk mirroring and raid level 5 (stripping with parity)? Can they both be implemented on one server?

If so, how is it done?

I'm not sure if you can do it at the hardware level, but you should be able to configure the raid controller for raid 5 and then use DFS with file replication services to provide the mirroring.

Are you planning to mirror to another drive on the same box, or to another location on the network?

Yes you can do this. You can convert the volumes to Dynamic Volumes and specify the Raid Level that your want. Hope this helps.

Hi! Why would anyone use disk mirroring on a RAID 5 disk set???? Does not make any sense! First of all if you run RAID 5 at hardware level, you can configure it to har at least 1 spare disk that kicks in when one of your drives go into defunc status. This way it is only i extreme cases (NASA etc) one would need to have RAID5 and mirroring, and then of course on hardware level. I would NOT recommend using ANY RAID configuration on software level.

Use an respected RAID controller manufacturerlike: IBM, Adaptec, Mylex etc. Hope this helps!!!

What you are looking to do is called Raid 0/1 (a.k.a Raid 10). It works this way: say you have raid array 1 consisting of disks a1, b1 and c1. Data is striped across these three disks in the array. You then have array 2 with disks a2, b2, and c2. Each disk in array 2 mirrors a disk in array 1. It is actually mirrored striping (no parity necessary, because each drive is mirrored).

Win2K software cannot do this. It would have to be done at the hardware level. Manufacturers like Dell and HP make these types of servers.
