cannot edit word file

My user send me a file and she wants me to edit the document.But i cannot. All of the items are grayed out. i'm assuming it's unlock or there is something of an option to modify it. if yes where can i find it? and how? i am running of windows 2000 pro with office 2000 applications. please help thanks

Sounds like your document has been password protected for editing.

to check this, click on tools. If there is a menu item "Unprotect Document" then this confirms the above suspicion.

If the greyed-out bits are blocks, have you tried typing in them - they may be the only areas on the protected documant that can be typed in.

Alternatively, try to track down the original creator of the doc - they may be the person who protected it, and may be able to provide the password to unprotect it...

If the password option doesn't pan out (but it sounds like a password protected issue), you may also want to see if the document is read-only on your system, especially if the creator's system was not W2K but something older.

you should be able to copy it to a new document and edit that one.

well the problem is you cannot copy and paste to another word document.. even save as mode,,, still the same. What i did is save it as a web page then i do cut and paste and store it again in the word and save as then,,, walahhh ... it was edited
