cannot edit word file

My user send me a file and she wants me to edit the document.But i cannot. All of the items are grayed out. i’m assuming it’s unlock or there is something of an option to modify it. if yes where can i find it? and how? i am running of windows 2000 pro with office 2000 applications. please help thanks
