cannot find cdrw / dvd drive

Drive letter does not appear on my computer for cdrw/dvd drive. Error message appears on device manager but evertime I deleted and restart the computer the system says found new hardware cd rom and dvd drive, but does not assign a drive letter. Using Windows XP Professional. Ricardo
