Cannot reply to emails in Outlook Sub-folders

By Tink56 ·
I use Outlook 2003. I have created several subfolders. I have created rules so that some emails drop into the subfolders instead of my In Box.

If I open one of these emails and reply to it, my reply drops into the same folder. No email actually gets sent. I have looked everywhere but can't find a fix for this.

The only solution is to move the email to the InBox. Then I can reply, my email goes out like it should. Then I have to move the original email back to its subfolder.

Any idea on a better fix?

No other rules on folders

by Tink56 In reply to have you tried a detect a ...

I created a folder under my InBox called ABC Listserv. There is a rule set up that any email from ABC Listerv goes into the ABC Listserv folder. If I reply on any of them, the reply appears in the same folder but the email never gets sent (i.e., it isn't in my Sent folder at all).

And, its with any subfolder and rules don't need to be set either. I created a test subfolder, moved some random emails to it. The weird reply feature happens on all of them.

Ran detect and repair. It did not resolve the problem.

I have not set any rules on individual folders. Is there a setting somewhere that allows you to do that? I right clicked on Properties for the folder and saw nothing there to change.

I think I solved it!

In Outlook click Tools | Options
Select the Preferences tab
Click on Email Options
Click Advanced Email Options
Deselect the item that reads "In folders other than the Inbox save replies with the original message."
Click OK three times to close all the boxes.

That seemed to solve my problem.

Interesting

so it was sending it and saving a copy for you then?

Sort of

It wasn't sending it. It was merely placing a copy of my in the same folder. If I were to go down and look in the Sent folder, there would be no trace of it.

Now there is and everything is working fine. I'm not sure if this is a default setting or not. Try it yourself.

A late reply I know, but thanks for coming back and posting the solution, this was really annoying me.
