    Cannot send email to China

    Locked

    by caron lacy ·

    Need Help ASAP.

My company has reps and customers in China and other various countries. We have Exch 5.5 with latest service pack on NT4sp6a. We cannot get email to go through to only our rep and customers in China. They hang in the Outbound queue on the Exchange server with the details “Network error during host resolution”. Could this be a problem on our side or is it on the host side?

    Thanks so much in advance!

    Caron.

The error message leads me to suspect this is a DNS issue somewhere along the line.

Take a look at MS Knowledge Base article 262782 -XIMS: Unable to Reach a Particular Host Using Domain Name System.

In response to answer one: We are currently testing this scenario, but is more difficult to track. With our Exchange Server we can monitor the message. With an external ISP, we just have to wait and see.

In response to answer two: According to our rep, we are the only contact that is having difficulty communicating through these particular email addresses. I have been able to find that 3 of the 4 email addresses are registered to the same domain name server using http://www.network-tools.com. I don’t know that much about DNS troubleshooting myself, so I’ve only been able to communicate our problem to our rep – not an admin at the host site.

I just wanted to subside my paranoia and confirm that it’s not a problem on our side.

      Thanks for the responses.

The results of an outside email source testing was successful. They were able to get their email to the email addresses in question. Where do I go from here? What do I check on our side to see if we are restricting?

The problem may be political as much as anything. If you could send email from a 3rd party, like hotmail, it may not prove anything. China is well known for their paranoia. They block access to much of the internet, (dangerous ideas out there). It’s possible that your company domain, along with many others is being blocked.

I would suspect a DNS issue, but I’m not sure what can be done about it.

The outside testing was successful (a company just across the street from us). I was able to use Exchange’s Specify by Domain on the Connections Tab of the IMS Connection Properties once I found the IP address of the MX Record Server for the domain of the email I was trying to send. So far this has proven successful.

Thank you all for your input and ideas.
