cannot shutdown after being in email.

Whenever I leave Outlook express and then try to shutdown the system freezes and I get the message that the program is not responding .
This only seems to happen after I have been into Outlook Express.
I tried downloading the shutdown patch through Microsoft but that didn’t help.
Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
