Can't connect to Exchange 5.5

By bandit ·
After updating virus defs. last friday and reapplying SP5 I now can't connect to my exchange server. when i try to logon to the domain as Exadmin through the NT server running Exchange it states that computer acount is not valid or the password is wrong, although I can log onto the PDC as Exadmin no problem. It also state in Server Manager that a trust relationship failed with the Exchange server even though it's a member server. Also if I logon to the server running Exchange as just administrator and try to start through start/programs/ when
Exchange Administrator starts it asks what server I would like to logon to and when I type in the exchange server name it states that there is a communication problem and won't start. Running TCP/IP Netbeui and IPX/SPX and whats strange is that in the browser the all servers show up and the Internet works. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Can't connect to Exchange 5.5

That's a tuff one!

If you have the time to put it down for an hour or so, that's what you should do:

First, make the exchange server, part of a workgroup under the TCP-IP properties, it will ask to reboot. When it reboots, turn it off.
Now goto Server manager and delete the entry for the server.
And finaly, remove any entry for this computer on Wins.
Turn the computer back on, log on locally (it's not part of the domain anymore), and
@ the TCP-Ip properties, join the domain.
It will create a new entry on Server manager and will create a new entry on your Wins as well as you Master Browser (Very important! The first place that any computer goes when looking for Exchange server is host file and DNS. For that reason, you shouldnot have an static entry in Wins for the Exchange server).
Re-apply the SP and reboot.

Good Luck!

I agree. That error message threw me for a loop once. The resolution included removing it from the domain (deleting the computer account in server manager) as well as doing it on the local computer (leaving the domain and joining a workgroup-the name of the workgroup is not relevant). Finally, re join the domain (after a restart) and bam-it should be recognized.

I've had this error on some desktops before and the proposed answer always worked.
