Can’t connect to RDP over VPN

by chris . Updated 18 years, 2 months ago

I have a small problem here. My work does not have port 3389 forwarded, so we use VPN. I can establish a VPN connection w/o issue, and bring up MSTSC no problem. I enter the non-FQDN computer name I’m connecting to, and being Vista (RDP v6), all I get is a username/password field (no domain). When the remote computer comes up in the new window, only my domain is available in the 3rd box for the remote login window.

I’ve tried the UNC format (both before the RDP session is started, and after in the remote computer window), putting domain\username as the login, then my pass as usual. Doing that shows “domain: work” in the MSTSC login box, and greys out the domain field in the remote login box, but I get the typical “The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct”.

Of course, my username/pass ARE correct. I use RDP all day at work. I’ve tried with both my domain admin account and my regular user account (which has RDP rights), no go.

What could be causing this?

My domain is a Win2k3 domain, as well as my work domain. The computer I’m connecting using VPN and RDP is a Vista Ultimate machine. I’ve also tried connecting VPN and RDP from my Win2k3 box (RDP v5), but that gave the same error.
