Can't finish install of Norton Antivirus

By joegrosskopf ·
I have a computer that was brought to me with a slew of ad-war, mal-ware and viruses. I started to fix it by running ad-aware, spy-bot and hijack this. These three work fine and it appears that everything is cleaned up however, I can't complete the installation of the Anti-Virus. The program installs but when the Norton Antivirus Configuration Wizard appears, the next button does not work. It does not say "not responding", it just sits there forever. In addition, if I run the configuration manager from the dos prompt, it also appears but none of the buttons work. Any deas? Thanks

I would start at http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm
for a free online virus scan to make sure machine is clean.
I also think Symantic has a preinstall scanner on their site.

My bottom line answer is that you still have a virus lurking in the system.

yes, some viruii prevent norton's from installing and/or running. if you can't get on the internet with the box you could also download and run stinger.exe from www.mcafee.com from another box and make floppy. run stinger from the desktop with the system booted into safe mode...you will need to get some kinda of virus scanner to run. if problems accessing internet try safe mode with networking maybe.
if lucky stinger or other scanner will remove what it finds if not it will report the name of the virus. then you can use a remover tool (probably).
be sure you re-scan the thing for adware after re-booting and after being on the internet. some really bad malware out there that looks like it is off but comes back upon connection to internet and reboot
