Can't get rid of NT Kernal

By cgerm45193 ·
NT 4.0 loaded on a 400mz dell, wanted to remove nt and replace with win 98. Followed the tech net instructions. When 98 starts we keep getting the blue screen error can't load windows ntkernal. I have tried everything I can think of, formated hard drive, fdisk /mbr, deleted partions and re-formated hard drive, low level formated hard drive, pulled cmos battery and replaced hard drive with new one. Still can't load win ntkernal, hitting any key and win98 starts and runs fine, except win98 hangs on shutdown. Any ideas.

Can't get rid of NT Kernal

Does this happen on a clean install of win98? Or, did this happen after software was installed, & you rebooted? If question 1, could be a bad install/win98cd. Try copying cabs to hdd then installing. If the latter, uninstall offending sw. Does it doit in safe mode also? No viruses?

If you low-level formatted your drive I guarantee you that there isn't a trace of NT left on your machine. Win 98 has a system file called ntkern.vxd. It sounds like this is what you are referring to. It's part of Windows Virtual Memory Management system. You may have a corrupt file. Use Win 98's file extractor to replace it with a clean copy.

Can't get rid of NT Kernal

Tried the above neither worked. I checked a good win98 install, there was no ntkern.vxd in any machine I checked.
But I figured it out.
1. remove all network protocols, same error.
2. remove ms print and share and ms client software, same error.
3.checked device manager noticed a ethernet and token ring card install.
4. disabled ethernet card at device manager, same error.
5. removed token ring pci card and try to remove card from device manager, SYSTEM LOCKED UP Ahhhhhh.
6.re-boot sameerror, system would lock every time i tried to disable or remove token card.
7.went to system tools and found token ring card register location and deleted the key. Re-booted system ran PERFECT.

Hope this helped
