Can't install anything on Linux box

By dcaratti ·
I've installed RH Linux 7.1 on my ThinkPad T22. The installation was completely successful. However whenever I try to install a program (ie. WordPerfect, StarOffice, LimeWire, etc.) the CPU maxes out and the install never completes. I've tried to install as root, as an ordinary user, and init level 1. The results are the same. I've tried a complete reinstall of RH 7.1 but the results are the same. Any ideas??

Thanks,
Dave

The first thing that I would look at is to make sure that you have enough disk space. I know that this sounds strange but.... Linux may not give you a disk full message...

I should have mentioned that I did check for free disk space. I just did an install where everything is under /. It is 51% in use.

Do these programs install via a java based installer? If so you may be having a problem with the jvm under rh71.
A few other apps have issues with java based installs under linux (oracle817 for instance)
try unsetting the LANG env variable ("unsetLANG") This trys to set your language prefs, but causes some jvm's to 100% cpu.
Most of the java installs will use there own jvm from the install CD. You might be able to download a newer jvm and trick the installer into running in the later version.
Copy the cd contents to HD, remove the included jvm, and symlink in the new one.

Bit of a long shot, but I've had similar problems before.

Have you tried upgrading the BIOS? In some cases, that does fix problems with Linux running on IBM Thinkpads, especially the older models. The BIOS update utility can be obtained from http://www.pc.ibm.com/support
