can’t join domain, net logon won’t start

I have a Win2k (SP2) server not in a domain. When I try to join it to a domain, I get an error – “The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service” – looking in the event viewer, the error is caused because the net logon service can’t start. When I look up the error code, it says it can’t start because the server is not part of a domain. I have reinstalled IP but was no help. Any ideas how to get around this so I can join it to the domain. Thanks.

      Hmm…. tricky.

My guess would be that somehow your server was in domain limbo when something went wrong and now its neither part of the domain you’re trying to join or its own domain.

Can you make it a member of its own domain again? Until you try to join to the other…

      Cheers,
      Tim.

Check out this MS Knowledge Base article. It may help. Be sure to close up any spaces in the URL after you paste it.

Tried this but didn’t help. The only way to fix that I found was to do a reinstall or “upgrade” of the existing installation. This fixed whatever was wrong. Thanks.

if you have dhcp running and it assigns both ipdresses and dns address. configure your server to obtain automatic. run the command from the command prompt. ipconfig /renew
you should receive a ip address and default ipaddress. Then try to rejoin the domain.
If no dhcp installed/running. configure the ipdress default gateway and dns servers. with the dns server address being correct there is no way for the server to find the PDC , also if you want to configure this server as a backup domain controller then run the command DCPROMO.exe and follow the direction provided , it is very easy.
      hope this helps.

also verify that file and printer sharing is enabled on the server.

Not using DHCP, IP address, subnet mask and default gateway are already configured correctly. There isn’t a problem accessing the domain, it wants to join it but the netlogon won’t start. This is a windows 2000 server joining an NT4 domain – to myknowledge, a win2k server can’t be an NT4 domain controller.
