Can't link 2 computers using the linksys

By saihui ·
I have 2 computers, one is winNT workstation 4.0 and win98 sec, I have a linksys hub and the network card, and connected them together. Computer name are the same, but everytime I open the network neighboor on win98 or winNT, I am not able to see other computers. The Hub light status and the lines are working fine, and the network cards are working as well.
Also, I assigs the ip address and the subnet mask on both of the tcp/ip->network card, and still does not work. Please help if you have any ideas
Thank!!!

Can't link 2 computers using the linksys

by Raffi_ In reply to Can't link 2 computers us ...

A couple of things must happen before two machines see each other in Winxx.

Are they on the SAME sub-net? IP address look like 192.168.0.xxx and subnet mask like 255.255.255.0?

Try a ping between the two computers. Does that work? If so - the problem is likely that they are not part of the same domain or workgroup. Look at the Nwtwork Properties for both machines and make sure that they are using the same workgroup(or domain).

If a PING does not work then you have a hardware problem - hub, a NIC, a Cable or your machines are not on the same sub-net.

I just noticed that you said that the computer names are the same. You MUST make them different. Cannot have two machines with the same name on the same wire.

the first answer sounds right on but your question caught my eye becuase you said linksys hub. do you have teh 5 or 6 port 10/100 hub? a blue little box? i have have 2 of these guys and have had truble with them. one thing to rember make sure that one of the network cables are not pluged in the uplink connection. it says which port it is by number and uplink. the only thing that should be in an uplink is when you either daisy chain many hubs togehter. i found that just using different connections like just 2 and 5 seem to work. i think there not that good. the other thing try putting netbui on both pc. then try pinging it as raffi said. if you get a response then you found it. also go to start, find, computer and search for the other computer by name. make sure the each pc has different names also. i dont remember if nt worksation has netmonitor. nt sever has it. if nt4 wkst has net monitor run it as you try pinging and working on it. it will show u what happens if it detects activityfrom the other computer.

You cannot have 2 identically named computers on the same network.

However both machines must have the same workgroup defined, and before win98 can see each computer, you must enable file and printer sharing.

You need the domain name and the workgroup names to be the same. Also, you need to have sharing turned on the Win9x systems to be seen by others. You don't need to share any resources but it needs to be a network service. In order to access the shares on the WinNt box you need be logged into Win9x with a valid name to NT. Check the username of the 9x boxes and be sure the name matches a user in NT. Also IPX works good for this because IP routes over the Internet and IPX does not. When you on the internet, a hacker can see your whole network. If you use IPX for NetBIOS only and disable file and print sharing on IP you can cut your profile down and you don't have the configuration hassles you have with IP. Downside is that you are using two protocols and it may slow down network a little. IPX is chattier tha IP.

P.S. DON'T USE NETBUI. NetBios and NETBUI are two different things. NETBUI is noisier than the other two combined.
