Can't open files in word

By raycuss ·
I restored the hard drive on my Dell 8400, running XP SP2. Have reinstalled Office XP. and copied my documents from a backup disk. I get the following message when I try to open a file: "The Document or path is not valid. Try these suggestions. *Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document."

I don't know what to do to be able to open my Word files. Can anyone help please?

it sounds like you copied 'shortcuts' of the back up documents. right click on one of the files that you think is a fair size, and click on properties, and look at the size, if it is something like 4k, it is probably a shortcut.
If that is the case, I'm sorry you've lost them

Been there, done that...you need to reassociate the ODC extensions to Winword.exe (MS WORD).

Copy a DOC to your desktop, hold shift and RIGHT click and choose OPEN WITH, then find and selecet Microsoft Word and select 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' and viola!

Hope this helps.
