Can't ping 2nd NIC on the sharing comput

I am trying to set up a home NW on windows 2000. On the sharing server is the the cable modem for out side which TCP/IP is configured for DHCP by ISP. Now I got a second NIC in my sharing computer with IP Address and The settings for theclient computer (2nd PC)IP adderss is The settings in device manager says the device is working OK. I've got both PC's connect with a cross wired cable and I cant ping the second NIC in the sharing computer What could be wrong? I disabled Sygate Firewall and it still dosent work.
Please help.

Workgroup Name

Be sure you have your Workgroups named exactly the same on the 2 pcs. Case sensitive.

Internet Connection Sharing

This may be over simplistic, but have you enabled Internet Connection Sharing on the multihomed system? This will allow the IP forwarding that you will need to hit the gateway, from the second PC, on the multihomed system. I would also suggest setting up a NAT router between the server and the cable modem. I would then set up a static IP address on the router NIC that is within the IP range and subnet mask of the router. You can then set up any IP range and subnet mask for the internal network.
