Career Change: Requesting input on certification choices

By jpsnow85 ·
Good morning!

I'm currently going back to school to get an A.A. in Computer science, in addition to a number of certifications. The certs I'm looking to get, in this order, are as follows:

Cisco Certified Network Associate
Microsoft Technology Associate

I expect that'll have the first two by summer, and I should have the CCNA by Fall, then I'll begin working on my MTA certification. From what I understand you need some time in the field before you can really take the Security certification test, is that true?

I've also heard conflicting information regarding the importance of a Bachelors degree in CS or CIS granted you have the right certifications. What has been your experience? I'm currently in a position where I'm getting about $6,000/year in paid education, but I would also like to shift into my IT career sooner rather than later, so I'm not sure if it's worth spending the extra time.

Any input would be greatly appreciated on the general trajectory of my certifications and/or insight on the IT professional community as a whole. Thank you!
