CD recognition problems

By heather.pfeil ·
Please advise how I would go about rectifying my hardware/software for my CD / DVD recording. It reads CD's and opens them no problem but when I go to create a CD be it data or audio the message pops up "please insert a blank CD" I have put a CD-R in a CD-RW ad DVD and it does not recognize it resulting in not being able to save info. Please help I am working on Windows XP

Software and hardware checking

by jmgarvin In reply to CD recognition problems

I know they are dumb questions, but I can't think of why this would happen

1) Are you sure you have the right drivers and recording software?

2) Are you sure you have a CDRW and not a DVDR or some such?

not a dumb question

by heather.pfeil In reply to Software and hardware che ...

I am certain, I have been writing to the CD-R and CD-RW for over a year, and then suddenly it stopped recording?

Ok some steps to take

by jmgarvin In reply to not a dumb question

1) Uninstall all the CDR software, including the drivers
2) Reboot
3) Install JUST the driver(s)
4) reboot
5) Install the software
6) reboot

Did that work (or do you need help doing this?)?

try removeing it from the device manager and reboot.

CD recognition problems

by heather.pfeil In reply to

I have tried that a couple of times and to no avail. What I cannot figure is the fact that I can use the CD player for information and data, even music, but when trying to write to the CD it simply does not find it.

You are amazing, it worked in that it now recognizes the cd however when recording it came up with these errors "Disc Creation Error" Write Error - [03/0C/00]; Write Error - Buffer underrun; Track writer error and Fixation?

Does the software allow for buffer underrun protection?

by jmgarvin In reply to thanks

It sounds like it might be a hardware problem if you are STILL having problems. Last ditch, replace the IDE cable and try again ;-)

I'm glad it is working (somewhat) and doing something. Just look for the buffer underrun check box and check it. That should clear things up. If not, replace the IDE cable and try again...

It maybe possible that the writing function has failed on the drive. I have seen this before. It will read disk but not write. Since you are using XP, one way to test this is to use XP's CD writing feature. Put in a blank CD-R/RW and right click a file/folder you wish to copy. Then use the sent to feature and send it to the CD-RW. You'll see the icon you have files ready to be written to CD. Open that and follow the wizard. If this fails then you'll know it's the drive and it should be replaced. If it works then it could be drivers or the writing software. Maybe check for updates at the softwares web site.

Thanks for your help, I tried the windows version of writing to cd and it comes up with an error and that I should tr another disc. This computer is only about a year old and really I cannot believe that the RW would pack so soon?
