CD tray automatically opens

By vjohnson ·
I have a PIII machine running W2K SP4. It has a CD Reader in it. Each time I boot up the CD tray automatically opens. If the client closes it, it automatically opens several times during the day.
My first thought was a piece of software trying to install however all software is loaded from an administrative install. This is one of 60 machines with the same image. The other machines do not have this problem.
Where do I look for settings.

Bad CD drive

by Mr.Wiz In reply to CD tray automatically ope ...

Past experience tells me this is a bad drive. I've had this problem in many machines over the years and the only fix I've found is to replace the drive.

Most likely a bad drive

But it could be something as simple as dust stuck in the drive mechanism. Try blowing out all the dust with compressd air first.
