cdaengine0400.dll error

By hop228a ·
This is starting to drive me insane.

Whenever I boot into windows desktop, the following error appears:

Error loading C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaengine0400.dll
The specified module could not be found.

I've checked for wildtangent program, none found.
Ran and deleted all entries in the registry for cdaengine0400.dll and wildtangent, yet still error popping up. Disabled cdaengine0400.dll in the msconfig startup, still showing.

Anyone know how to stop this error appearing, thanks?

Did you delete the WildTangent folder?

WildTangent is a program for some on-line games.

If you play on-line games, you may need to reinstall WildTangent.

If you want to remove WildTangent, here are links to some tips:

I searched for wildtangent and nothing found, not even folder.

I downloaded the webdriver from wildtangent to install, this time its coming out with a different error message. Its now saying:

An exception occurred while trying to run ""C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain"

I tried the wildtangent remove links:

but still no fix.

Which version of Windows are you running?

How much RAM do you have?

Any recent hardware changes or software installations just before this started happening?

Since you cannot reinstall Wild Tangent, something must be in the way. Often when you only partially remove software you cannot reinstall the software.

You say you cleaned out the registry entries.
It is possible that you missed at least 1 key.

If you have the option to disable cdaengine0400 in msconfig, it MUST still be in the registry.

Most of the items listed on the msconfig startup tab are in the RUN keys in the registry.

This is acting like mal-ware in that it comes back after you delete the registry keys.

You might try running AdAware or SpyBot Search and Destroy.

I would also scroll through the legacy system files System.Ini and Win.Ini to see if the file shows up there.

If you are running XP, take a look at the Services tab in msconfig.

Had another thought.

If you don't have it, download and install tweakUI from Microsoft.

Open tweakUI and click on the Control Panel link.

Uncheck the entry for cdaengine

Download, install, update and run Spybot Search and Destroy (previously mentioned by Chas).

Most adware/spyware removal programs do not remove Wild Tangent since it is semi-legitimate software. Spybot will eliminate it.

Spybot is available at link below. Be careful, there are similar sounding programs that are adware laden.

What is it?
WildTangent - cdaengine0400.dll

What does it do?
This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all.

Another suggestion would be to run Hijack this and see what entries come up with it.

You can get HJT here

If you are not sure what to check, I would be able to check the log. Be carefull using as you could remove an entry that you really need.
