Celeron vs Athlon vs Pentium

I'm a network tech for an office w/about 20 PC's. They have a variety of processors from Celeron 1.07 Ghz to Athlon's to P-4 3.0 ghz. I'm looking for some kind of 'bench-mark' to tell which PC's need to be upgraded/replaced/raped for spare parts. Can anyone provide info on differences between these? I have heard that a celeron is basically a 'broken' pentium. Anybody have any insight on rating/explaining differences between celeron/athlon/pentiums? Thanks!

It depends on what you want to run on the machine.

Celerons are not broken Pentiums, just Pentiums without a big cache and without some of the math processing functions, which means heavily mathed based programs will still run, just take longer.

Its challenging to bechmark based on one aspect of the system, because any system is as fast as its slowest component. Throw a fast CPU or video card into an older motherboard and it may fit, but not give you optimum performance.

But you also have to assess what you want to do with the machines. If you want to run MS Office and do email, even a Celeron 1 Ghz with 256 or 512 of RAM is sufficient. If you want to run multi-user Access databases or huge spreadsheets, you'd be better with a true Pentium thats a little faster. But a new Celeron running at 3 Ghz would probably benchmark faster than a Pentium 4 at 2 Ghz.

An Athlon is more like a Pentium than a Celeron. The AMD equivalent to a Celeron is a Sempron(in the current lineup, Durons were the previous generation).

I'd also think about how long you intend to keep these machines. If you intend to upgrade to Vista in 2007, you could keep the older stuff and jumk it then, or be proactive and junk it now. Personally, I would hold on to it to get the best value out of it.

I wouldn't keep spares for the older equipement, when it breaks, replace it.

PC Maagazine used to have a benchmark tool for MS Office that would be very applicable in this instance, it used actual MS Office code in a test tool.
