cfg exchng srvr to accept failed email

By davego ·
Our company has offices in two different cities. If the exchange server in Seattle goes down or is unavailable for whatever reason, how do I configure the phoenix exchange server to accept the email from the Seattle exchange server while it is down? And vice versa? Is this possible?

Is there a way to edit a dns mx record for one exchange server point to another email server which will accept any failed emails from the first server?

Thanks for any pointers to faqs, websites, etc.

Have a groovy day!

If the two servers are connected via a site connector and communicating then you have to specify two MX records. One with a low value(10) for the seattle server and another with a higher value(100) for the phoenix exchange server. If the seattle server becomes unavailable, pheonix will accept it if and only if you alreay have the two sites connected.

if they are not connected in anyway, have you considered checking to see if your ISP will queue your mail until your server comes up. Many ISP's will setup secondary MX records pointing to thier mail servers.
