Change drive letter for CD drive Win2K

By dm4w ·
I currently have a DVD/CD combo drive (read only)
on a PIII-1GHz, Win2K Pro system. I want to install either a CD-RW or DVD-RW (writer)drive as a second drive on the system.

Question:
How do I change the drive letter for the existing
DVD/CD combo drive (drive E:) to another letter,
so that when the second CD-RW or DVD-RW (writer) drive is installed I can make it the E: drive (primary drive) and the CD/DVD read only combo drive something different like (J: drive)????

Thanks in advance for any input....

D.

Change drive letter for CD drive Win2K

Hi,

After you've installed your new DVD or CD, you'll be able to change both drive letter to what you want.

You do so through Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management ... and then right click on the disk to set its drive letter.

If you want to simply swap the drive letters, then you'll need to set one to another letter, the other to the letter you want and then the first's back to its correct letter.

Cheers,
Tim.

One method is to place the both drives on the same controller. The primary drive or master will be installed first (drive E: assuming you already have devices installed that use c:&d:) the secondary drive or the slave drive on that controller shouldfall in as a drive following the letter e: if it too is a cd/dvd

Goto:
Programs > Administrative tools > Computer Management
In the console, You will see storage on the left hand side. double click on it. You will see Disk Management under it. When you click on it, you will see your Drives. Right click on the Drive in the bottom pane which says CD-ROM or DVD. You will see "Change Drive Letter and Paths..." menu. CLick on it and they you will have option to change the drive letter.

Note: if Administrative tools menu is not available in programs (startupmenu), you can goto control panel and then click on Administrative tools there.
