Are you manually assigning an IP address, or can it receive it dynamically?

If it is dynamic, then type "ipconfig /release" (leave out ""). This will release the IP address on ALL network adapters. Then type "ipconfig /renew" (as above). This will assign an IP address to the adapters. If there is an internal modem, make sure you specify which adapter you wish to change as it may sit there forever trying to get an IP address for an unused adapter.
If you want to assign an ip address, then tryipconfig /renew X.X.X.X
I don't know what effect this will have but it may be worth a try.

Yep, it's a manual IP address I want to assign. I tried the ipconfig /renew x.x.x.x, but it didn't work.

i don't think so. windows98 is not a dos based OS the ipconfig renew command only works when there is a dhcp server. besides the ip address you also have to edit the subnet mask and default gateway. what wrong with the gui?

As a result of a virus, amoung other things, the Network Properties could not be displayed. I have managed to change the IP address through the Registry, however I was still interested to know if there is a command line way to change it.

Thanksanyway.
