Change IP of WIN 2k Domain Controller

By ndhiman ·
For some reason I have to change the IP scheme of my small network from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.200.x. I have 1 Win 2k DC and 10 win 2k clients. The server acts as a DNS, WINS, DHCP server. I will still keep the same domain name and the name of the server will still be same. Is it safe to do this.. If yes, is there a special way to do this? What should be done first and what should be done last???
Any comments ASAP will be helpful.. I only have 2 days left to do this.
Thanks

Change IP of WIN 2k Domain Controller

by Mr Peters In reply to Change IP of WIN 2k Domai ...

Hey! I just did the same thing at my office. It's actually very safe, and very simple. With only ten clients, the easiest thing to would be to change the IP Address on the server first, then check your DNS Zone to make sure that the DC's new address shows up correctly. If not, just change it manually. Make sure you change ALL of the records that pertain to that server (the domain "A" record, nameserver records, etc.) Next, from the command-prompt, type NBTSTAT -RR (capital RR is very important). This will update WINS with the server's new IP address. Once that's done, just change the DHCP scope to reflect the new address range and change the scope/server options accordingly. As for the clients, simply run IPCONFIG /RENEW from the command line (with admin priv's). Verify that the clients get the right address and that the scope options are right. If clients have trouble resolving the new address, run IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS, this will make sure that it goes the DNS server first instead of the DNS cache on the client.

I had 4 servers and 21 clients, and I did exactly what you see above, it only took about 45 minutes or so. The fact that some clients had admin priv's helped a little.

feel free to email me if you need more help.

Change IP of WIN 2k Domain Controller

very simple.......
shut down all work stations. Change the ip address on your server. reboot to be safe. verify you dns and wins address has changed. Reconfigure your dchp scope options and the dns, default gateway if nneded.
Reboot all workstations. the clients send out a dhcp broadcast message to any available server. the changed ip will answer and hand out new ipaddresses which you have configured minutes ago. you may have to on a few machines to run . ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew at the command prompt on a few systems..

that is it. I have done this over a dozen times with no others actions needed. may clients are always switching isp and network devices.
