Changing computer name on Exchange comp.

By rlevesque ·
In the near future, I will need to change the name of my computer that houses my Exchange server.

Currently, it is spruce and the domain is acadia.com (i.e. spruce.acadia.com). We will be ridding ourselves of the acadia.com domain, and since we have a new one, need to change to that. SO, the bottom line is that I would loke to end up at mail.forgepartners.com for the entire name.

For some reason, I don't think a simple changing under network properties will work, will it?? Its NT4 Server using sp6a.

What would happen if I left it at spruce, but changed the somain name so it was spruce.forgepartners.com. Would that be easier??

Tnanks in advance!

Richard

Changing computer name on Exchange comp.

I'd avoid, at almost any cost, changing the computer(NetBIOS) name on an Exchange 5.5 server. Changing the name itself is easy enough, but Exchange won't like it. Your directory is tied into the computer name and you'll lose it once the name is changed. The only way to regenerate the directory on a renamed server is a reinstall.

Fortunately, from what you state a computer name change is unnecessary. The changes you need to make are in DNS. Changing the NetBIOS name should be unneeded. If you use an ISP to maintain youir DNS, they should be able to assist.
