Changing Internet Domain Exchange 5.5

By HowieD ·
I'm running Exchange 5.5 sp 3 on NT 4.0 and need to change the Internet domain name that Exchange handles.

i.e. current domain xyz.com new domain abc.com I don't need to save any of the previous email or exchange configuration is my best bet to reinstall exchange or can it be easily reconfigured - if so details of how would be appreciated...

Mx record for new domain has already been set up.

Open up your exchange admin, go to configuration/connections and go to the Internet Mail Service (IMS).

On the routing tab you should see your old domain name in the list. Simply add the new domain name in the list and select inbound.

Also asa side note, 5.5 is up to sp4. I reccomend installing it.

Thanks for the pointer but surely this will leave me accepting both domains - I want to completely drop the original domain in favour of the new one - can I just delete the old domain after adding the new one ? Or does that have other ramifications ?

You can remove the other domain. Exchange does not care.

I have about 50 domains in mine.

Once the old domains MX record no longer points to your mail server it won't make a difference anyways.

I don't think I can reply without rating this as unacceptable so here goes my last question before I give you your well earned points - If I delete the old domain, will that effectively delete the mailboxes created under that domain ?Will new users automatically have email addresses created under the new domain once I have made the changes?

PS I'll take your advice and update the service pack as well.

Just so we are both clear on this one.

You are not removing the exchange server out of the user domain. Doing so will be bad.

What you are doing is removing what top level domains can be routed into the mail server ie xyz.com and abc.com.

Now, Any mailbox/user that has the e-mail address
user@xyz.com will not receive mail once you get rid of the mail servers ability to route mail for the xyz.com domain.

You have to add/change everyone's smtp address to reflect the new domain. It is not automatically generated(it is sort of but not for existing mailboxes).

to change automatically generated address'
----------------------------------------
I beleive that if you navigate to servers/your server name/ highlight Directory Service and press alt+enter/ go to e-mail address'.

This is where you control the default address' for any new mailboxes created.

Yes, we are singing from the same hymn sheet - I'm only changing the tld.

Thanks for your time + help, its eased my worries, not being a trained Exchange Administrator I'm always wary of making major changes as it always seems to come back and bite me!

Cheers,

Howie
