Changing name of My Computer icon

By NeedsHelp ·
I want to change the My Computer Icon to display the computer name for all users who log onto a Windows 2000 machine. I have tried changing the value for Localized String under the Registry Key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} as mentioned in one Tech Republic article but it has no effect. Can someone help?

Do you want the name of the My Computer icon to "automatically" change upon login? Meaning when "johndoe" logs in, the My Computer icon automatically reads "johndoe computer"? Or do you simply want to rename the My Computer icon?

Try these instructions instead. You can leave out the %username% part.

OK, go here..

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Clases\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
Change or add the key:
LocalizedString
Type REG_EXPAND_SZ
Value "%USERNAME% on %COMPUTERNAME%"

This changes the My Computer icon to dispaly the users netork ID on The servername.
Eg. "Custsrv1 on Meta02"
We use this on all of out terminal servers. Works all the time.

Good luck!!

Why this does not work for me I don't know. Is it possible that another registry also needs to be changed along with this one?
