Children of the Stars

In a certain future history an interstellar ship crash-lands on an Earth-like planet. The crew all die in the crash, but there are hundreds (thousands?) of passengers, whose great desire is to get back to civilization. Alas, they are all rather uneducated, being petty criminals, or at least people convicted of crimes, so they know they will not manage it in their lifetimes. Nothing daunted, they decide to do it for their descendants. They manage to write down a lot of memories and build a village with a rather puritan set of mores. At some time some people break away from the village, and eventually someone from the rebels gets into the atomic motor of the remains of the spaceship and blows it up. This is just about the time the village is making a daughter colony on an estuary.

Does anyone remember this story? It was serialized in a magazine ca. 1960. The first 3 installments were combined in a book hight "Children of the Stars". Who was the author? Were the next 3 installments put into a book and, if so, what was its name? I imagine there was a 3rd volume. Any ideas about that? Google, Goodsearch, Wikipedia, Amazon, ALibris - all lead nowhere relevant. Anyone here know?

Thnak you, Palmetto

I fear that you have found another book of the same name; it is definitely not the one I half-remember. Of course, it does look interesting in its own way... but I don't have time to read all the interesting-looking books I come across. I am trying to list read or part-read items of my childhood, to see where certain stories led.

Can you remember which magazine?

Amazing Tales?
F & SF?
Playboy? (Hey, Hef ran some good stuff between the pictures!)

which magazine?

by john.a.wills In reply to Children of the Stars

Well, I know it wasn't Playboy or Amazing Tales, for neither of those came into my parents' house. F&SF is just possible; so is New Worlds. Galaxy and Astounding both seem more likely.

Perhaps this?

by seanferd In reply to Children of the Stars

I can't even find a description, let alone a synopsis, but:
1959, Science Fiction Adventures (issue 9) "The Children of the Stars"

published with two following stories in Martian Enterprise (hardly sounds interstellar here).
The Children of the Stars
Forgotten Knowledge
The Road Back

Maybe you'd recognize the mag cover?

If you're feeling lucky, you can try the advanced search at ISFDB.

I rather think you're right

by john.a.wills In reply to Perhaps this?

although I do not recognize the cover and, as you say, the title of the anthology does not seem interstellar: the 3 titles together would fit quite well into such a saga; possibly the convicts were being transported from Mars. ALibris does not have the book in stock. I wonder where I can find Science Fiction Adventures (perhaps the British Library the next time I'm in London, or New York Public).
