Start from scratch....sounds like the HDD is failing if chkdsk has to be run THAT often!

Some more options

Try to borrow a XP cd to run sfc/scannow. If you have the option, you can take out the HD and connect it to a USB hard drive adapter and run CHKDSK while it is plugged into another computer.

I have to agree with Darryl on this.

Unless you have a nasty virus infection, the fact that you need to run chkdsk frequently implies that your hard drive is failing.

Even if you can get it to work, it would be to your benefit to make a back up of all of your files and install a new hard drive.

As to running SFC, the Windows CD that you use for SFC "MUST" be of the same service pack level as you have installed. If you are running XP SP3, you will need to slip-stream SP3 onto a SP1 or SP2 CD before SFC will run properly.

Your big risk running SFC with an older service pack CD is that you can end up with mixed old and new versions of key systems files and end up in worse shape than you were in before.

Still, head my warning. Replace the hard drive before it fails completely.
