Chronic Slowdown of NT

By ehoffman ·
I have an NT 4.0 machine, 512 MB RAM, 2 Processors with two drives in a RAID config....these people have the 2 drives sharing a RAID channel, so that accounts for some performance hits....but what have y'all learned to look for on a machine that has"chronic slowdown" problems and the admin says it just seems like a slow machine. He has done the basics well, unneeded services killed, static size paging volume twice the RAM, blah blah. Performance monitoring only reveals occasional high disk queue times I atrribute to the shared RAID channel.

Thanks for pointers!

Have you tried a good defragmentation program? In my experience, NT fragments more quickly and to a higher degree than other Operating Systems. You might be able to find an evaluation copy of Diskkeeper or Norton. This may not completely cure theproblem, but it's sure to help.

They have Diskkeeper on the system. Drives are optimized well. I have not ruled out memory leak as a reason it gradually slows, but not real sure how to get a good handle on this in the short time I am here (2 weeks)

Make sure one of the raid drives is not failing. When a drive in a system fails, it appears that the computer is in molasses and could account for your slowdown.

What other programs and/or services are running on this machine? - DHCP, DNS, WINS, Exchange, OWA, VPN? Any antivirus software? Antivirus scanning could definitely account for some slowness. Any unnecessary protocols like IPX/SPX or NetBEUI? Any database software running like SQL or large Access databases? I doubt the RAID is an issue, even with two drives on the same channel - mirroring doesn't generally slow down the system at the user level that much. No specific answers - but these are some of the things I'd look at if you haven't already. Hope this helps!

no extra services, just RAID 5 storage space, SCSI drives, the whole 9. 12 Drives as logical drive E. Primarily Netware shop, so IPX is installed, no Netbui.
