clicking mailto: link causes many popups

By degnan ·
I have a user running winxp pro using outlook 2003. In internet explorer, if they click on a link with a mailto: destination (ex., around 70 blank popup windows appear with mailto: in the address bar. I imagine there would be more but i think the memory maxes out at around 70 windows. My hunch is that it is an email configuration problem. Has anyone experienced this and found a solution?

And you scanned this system and found no malware?

I can tell you that I've never experienced that behavior in the past on a default install of XP and Outlook 2003.

I was able to reproduce the behavior you report by making a manual registry change. Clicking on a simple mailto link on a web page brings up an "endless" number of Internet Explorer windows. Perhaps this info can help you stop yours from happening.

Here's how I did it:

1. In Internet Explorer, the program that is launched when a web page link is clicked is controlled by Tools->Internet Options->Programs Tab. On my Windows XP machine, the options for "Email" are Hotmail, Microsoft Outlook, MSN Explorer, Netscape 7.2 Mail, and Outlook Express. Because "Internet Explorer" was not one of the options (as you would expect), I changed the registry manually (regedit.exe) to force it.

2. The key is:

3. The original value was (my setting was "Outlook Express"):

"%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1

4. I changed it to:

iexplore.exe mailto:

5. After this registry change, clicking on a "mailto" link on any web page produces the behavior you describe: An "endless" sequence of popup Internet Explorer windows.

6. Try changing the "Email" program on the Tools->Internet Options->Programs Tab. Then, click on a "mailto" link and see if the situation has been changed or fixed.

7. If #6 does not solve the problem, try manually editing the registry with regedit.exe. Navigate to the key in #2 above and change it to something else.

This is nitty gritty, but I suspect you'll have to roll up your sleeves on thsi one.

Did this help?

i didn't need to edit the registry, but by elevating user privileges, changing the IE email settings, changing them back to outlook, then restoring their original privileges fixed it. I appreciate you getting me on the right track, thanks!
