I was suggested by one of my employees to move our company’s accounting function to the cloud. I am not sure why this is a good idea, but I would like to learn more. Could someone please elaborate on why cloud accounting could be beneficial for my company?

Yes, You have received a good piece of advice. Moving your accounting to the cloud is a great idea. I mean, you get 24/7 access to your accounting data and files, have your data backed up automatically, always get the latest edition of the software, and are just a call away from prompt customer service. Personally, I would say go for it. It will save you time and money.link removed by moderator

Cloud accounting (or online accounting) has all the same functionality as desktop accounting, but moves the whole process to the cloud and expands upon it. There’s no desktop application – you log in to an always-up-to-date online solution and all data is safely stored on a cloud server.
The cloud solution has reduced or eliminated redundant, time-consuming work that — let’s face it — is the bane of most businesses. Mostly, cloud accounting allows greater access to real-time data, which increases engagement with businesses’ financials and assists in making decisions.

– Remote access to the business data is only an advantage if you don’t work at the office, but at home without a VPN connection to the business network.
– Multi-user collaboration on same projects/files doesn’t seem very relevant for accounting, and it might very well be possible that it’s also possible on the company network.
– The resources needed for accounting tend to be rather stable, so the scalability of resources isn’t relevant.
– For the security: are you implying that the OP’s company has bad security?
– Flexibility of pricing is hardly relevant for a continuous process like accounting. Finally, what typical accounting tasks aren’t possible with traditional methods, like running the financial system in your own data center?
