Combo stopped recognizing CDs but reads DVDs

By henriqueraposo ·
My DVD-ROM/CDRW Combo has just stopped recognizing any kind of CD discs (original, data CD-R, data CD-RW, audio CDs or blank ones), but it still reads all my DVDs. Could this be a software bug or a hardware malfunction? I've got a ECS A928 Desknote Computer, P4 1.8, 256Mb RAM, Windows 98SE. The AIDA software describes the combo as a LiteOn LSC 24081, although there's no description of it in the specification manual or label that you could see.
Any suggestion of tests or even a diagnosis is
welcome. Thanks.

Different lasers

by henriqueraposo In reply to Combo stopped recognizing ...

Mike Richter, from google's group comp.publish.cdrom.hardware, stated the following:
"Unfortunately, it is almost certainly a hardware malfunction. The lasers used to read and to write DVDs are different from those used for CDs. It
sounds as though your CD read laser (or its supporting electronics) has died. It might be only dirt that killed it, but that seems very unlikely.
